Music Theory Course

One of the most common challenges I see in young musicians is not practical ability — it’s music theory.

Many students reach Grade 4 or 5 practical, only to find they can’t move forward because Grade 5 theory is required. At that point, theory can suddenly feel urgent. Children are often asked to learn several grades’ worth of material at once, which can be overwhelming and stressful — particularly for sensitive or anxious learners.

This holiday course offers a much calmer, more effective approach.

Rather than rushing or cramming, we build theory gradually and securely, in manageable holiday blocks, so understanding develops naturally and confidence grows steadily over time.

🌱 A gentle, nervous-system-friendly approach

It is always better to start theory at a slightly lower level and become very, very confident in the basics before moving forward.

This is not about holding children back — it’s about giving them a foundation that feels safe, clear, and automatic. When the basics are secure, everything that follows becomes easier.

Starting lower:

  • Keeps the nervous system calm and regulated

  • Reduces pressure and anxiety

  • Builds genuine understanding (not fragile learning)

  • Leads to faster, more confident progress later on

Which theory level should my child do?

As a general guide:

  • Practical Grade 1–2
    → Grade 1 Theory

  • Practical Grade 2–3
    → Grade 2 Theory

  • Practical Grade 3–4
→ Grade 2 or Grade 3 Theory, depending on confidence

When in doubt, I always recommend starting lower. It is far better for learning, confidence, and long-term musical development.

Holiday classes available

This holidays, I’ll be running:

  • Grade 1 Theory

  • Grade 2 Theory

  • Grade 3 Theory (subject to interest)

Each class will be:

  • Small and supportive

  • Calmly paced

  • Taught with lots of singing, clapping, and musical examples

  • Focused on understanding music from the inside, not rote learning

There is no pressure, no cramming, and no expectation of prior theory exams.

Who this course is for?

This course is ideal for:

  • Singers and instrumentalists

  • Students around Grades 1–4 practical

  • Children who feel unsure or nervous about theory

  • Families wanting to avoid the Grade 5 theory bottleneck later on

The course runs online over six consecutive days (Monday–Saturday) during the school holidays, with a 90-minute live lesson each morning. Being online means students can join from anywhere, even if you’re away. By the end of the course, your child will feel calm, confident, and ready to sit the grade online. The cost is £30 per class, £180 for the full six-day course.

Next steps

Please let me know which theory grade you’d be interested in for your child (Grade 1, 2, or 3), and I’ll send you the full details, including dates and booking information.

If you’re unsure which level is best, I’m very happy to advise.

This is about building confidence first — progress follows naturally.
